Fairhope
Church Street Inn

51 South Church St.
Box 526
Fairhope, AL 36533

If you’d like to stay in an old Fairhope Colony home, this one built of white stucco in 1921 at the edge of downtown fits the bill. "People coming to Fairhope want to stay either downtown or on the water," says owner Becky Jones, who also runs Bay Breeze Guest House. She can fulfill either desire.

This is a family home last occupied by her late mother. It has three guest rooms, an expansive living room, dining room and a kitchen stocked with all the makings for a self-serve continental breakfast. The house is much as her mother left it – with a green bead divider in a doorway and a living room full of sofas, chairs and even a window seat, all slip-covered in ruby fabric. Becky shows a scrapbook of her mother as an Ivory Soap girl. Her portrait over the fireplace was done by a young artist who broke his neck diving off a Daphne pier and painted with a brush between his teeth.

A front bedroom offers a queen bed, TV and an abundance of quilts – on the walls, draped across a chair and on an extra twin bed – plus a secret passage that goes all around the upstairs of the house. On the main floor are a side guest room with a Jenny Lind queen bed and a rear room with a king poster bed. All are outfitted with antiques and family heirlooms from five generations.

Guests make themselves very much at home in this grandmotherly home. Out back is a snug rear courtyard and a fountain.
