Lower Connecticut
River, Essex, Old Lyme Situated in a secluded setting a block from the Goodspeed Opera House, this 1818 Colonial house was built by an Essex shipbuilder and was once occupied by a Goodspeed. Now it’s lovingly run by energetic Colin and Jane Kagel and their son Colin, wife Lisa and infant son. "Ours is a real family enterprise," says Jane. And a winning one, at that. The house is full of books, artworks and family collections. Among them are Jane’s silver urns in an open cupboard above the huge fireplace in the living room and Colin’s prized canvasback decoys on a shelf in the upstairs sitting room. The six guest rooms, all with featherbeds and antique furnishings, are decorated with character. Four with queen beds have working fireplaces. The most dramatic is the Director’s Suite, with a beamed cathedral ceiling, a kingsize brass and iron bed, its own balcony and a dressing area off a theatrical bathroom with lights around the mirror of the double vanity and its own sauna. Jane and Lisa cook full breakfasts in the former 1860 kitchen, which has a small fireplace and baking oven. Crustless spinach quiche is a favorite, as are a variety of french toast recipes. Other possibilities include spinach quiche, salsa omelets and waffles with hot peaches or blueberry sauce.
