Essex and Old Lyme Listed on the National Register, this 1746 center-chimney Colonial once was the home of the deacon at the pillared Congregational meetinghouse across the street. It served five generations of Pratts and now houses an expanding B&B. It opened with four guest quarters and added four more rooms in the former James Pharmacy building next door. Each room has a queensize canopy or poster bed, working fireplace, bath with whirlpool tub, TV, telephone and stereo/CD player. A fishnet canopy bed is angled from the corner in the Sunrise Room, which has two Queen Anne wingback recliners and an oversize jacuzzi. The premier accommodation in the main house is a suite with a carved four-poster rice bed, french doors opening onto a TV room with a day bed and an extra-large bathroom with a double jacuzzi. A pleasant living room is furnished with period pieces and decorative accents characteristic of the rest of the house. A full breakfast is served by candlelight on weekends in a formal dining room with an extra-long table for sixteen. The fare might be bananas foster french toast or pecan-encrusted waffles one day and eggs benedict the next. A continental breakfast buffet is offered on weekdays. A sideboard holds afternoon beverages, cookies and decanters of port. Next door, the establishment continues to operate the James Gallery & Soda Fountain, a gift shop and an old-fashioned ice cream parlor.
