Mystic/Stonington
The Inn at Stonington
60 Water St.
Stonington, CT 06378

The old Harborview Restaurant was destroyed by fire, and from its ashes in 2001 rose this luxury B&B facing the waterfront, the first real place to stay in the borough. Owner Bill Griffin spared little expense in producing a handsome gray and white-trimmed, three-story inn up against the sidewalk in front, with docks and water behind.

The twelve guest rooms in the main building, four on the first floor and eight on the second, come with fireplaces and ten have jacuzzi tubs. Beds are queensize or kingsize. Furnishings are "very high-end," Bill said, with English-style fruitwood furniture and rich fabrics. "No two rooms are even remotely the same in terms of decor." Upholstered club chairs, some with ottomans, are the norm, as are built-in shelves around the fireplaces. Half the rooms have water views and french doors leading onto private balconies. The best view may be from the cheery yellow third-floor sitting room with a balcony outfitted with all-weather, Parisian-style bistro chairs.

On the main floor are an intimate bar and a living room/dining area where a substantial continental breakfast is served. Complimentary wine and cheese are offered in the afternoon.

Six larger guest rooms with high ceilings were added in 2003 in a brick annex next door. All have jacuzzi tubs and five have kingsize beds and fireplaces. One village-side room has two double beds. The smallest room is cheery in neon celery green. The two seaside rooms contain small sitting areas and refrigerators. One is a deluxe room offering a large balcony with a view of the harbor.

The main inn includes a basement exercise area and has bicycles for guests.

Eighteen rooms with private baths. April-October: doubles, $199 to $440 weekends, $180 to $299 midweek. November-March: doubles, $155 to $395 weekends, $140 to $270 midweek.
