Mystic/Stonington This inn, transformed from a vacant restaurant along the Mystic River, offers ten luxurious guest rooms right beside the water in the heart of downtown Mystic. Named after ships built in Mystic, all have whirlpool baths (five of them double size), telephones and televisions hidden in cupboards or armoires and six have fireplaced sitting areas facing the river. A local decorator outfitted them in lavish style: mounds of pillows and designer sheets on the queensize canopy or king beds; loveseats or sofas with a plush armchair in front of the fireplaces. Mantels and cabinetwork make these rooms look right at home. Our favorites are the second-floor rooms at either end, brighter and more airy with bigger windows onto the water, a couple with half-cathedral ceilings. Rooms in the middle are darker in both decor and daylight. Four rooms on the ground floor are suite-size in proportion and come with double whirlpool tubs and wet bars with microwaves, while a fifth room has a private entrance off the deck and a deluxe jetted shower. Each room is distinctively different and has its own merits. "One couple stayed here four times in the first month and worked their way around the inn, staying in different rooms," reported co-owner John McGee. There's a common room with all the local menus and glass tables for continental breakfast. Fresh fruit, homemade muffins, cereal, granola, cheeses and yogurt are offered each morning.
