The Kennebunks The main lodge in a converted barn is the heart of the Old Fort Inn. You enter through the reception area and antiques shop. Beyond is a large rustic room with enormous beams, weathered pine walls and a massive brick fireplace, the perfect setting for antiques. That’s where the innkeepers set out a buffet breakfast each morning. Guests pick up wicker trays with calico linings, help themselves to bowls of gorgeous fresh fruits and platters of pastries, and sit around the lodge, on the enclosed porch or outside on the sun-dappled deck beside the large swimming pool. Homemade sweet breads (blueberry, zucchini, banana, oatmeal and pumpkin are some) and croissants are a daily feature and there are sticky buns on Sundays. The innkeepers added granola and yogurt to the spread, and quickly found they were going through twenty pounds of granola a week. The main lodge and brick carriage houses contain fourteen large and luxurious guest rooms and two suites. The elegant, antiques-appointed rooms feature canopied or four poster beds with down comforters, fine fabrics and handsome wall coverings. All rooms are air conditioned with baths outfitted with Aveda amenities and heated tile floors (some baths feature jacuzzis), WiFi, phones, hidden television and deluxe wet bars. Several rooms have gas fireplaces. In the hall, artfully framed shadow boxes containing Victorian outfits are conversation pieces. The inn is a quiet retreat on fifteen acres of immaculately maintained grounds and woodlands, away from the tourist hubbub, but within walking distance of the ocean. At night, the silence is deafening. The inn offers a tennis court as well as the pool. Many guests are repeat, long-term customers, and it’s easy to see why.
