Middle Plantation Inn

9549 Liberty Road
Frederick, MD 21701

The "rustic bed and breakfast" description on its brochure best describes this place ten minutes east of town in the village of Mount Pleasant. Or does it? Fronting on a suburban highway amid tract homes, it's really much more.

Shirley and Dwight Mullican tore down his grandfather's farmhouse on 26 acres and rebuilt in 1989 from the ground up, using logs, beams and floors from the original house. "So it looks old," says Shirley, "but has all the modern conveniences."

Guests enter through a rear keeping room, cozy with a tall corner stone fireplace, a skylight and built-in stained-glass windows separating it from the Mullicans' quarters on the main floor. Upstairs are three guest rooms with private baths, each bearing novel touches but contemporary amenities like plush carpeting and hidden TVs. Dwight's elaborate hand stenciling graces the Victorian Room, which contains a carved walnut bed, a Victorian loveseat and side chair. There's a modern shower stall beside the clawfoot tub. Old hunting prints and white pine country furniture are in the Hunt Room, where the TV is hidden in the corner washstand and an old icebox with a shelf is for storing clothes. The rear Plantation Room has more stenciling, a tester canopy bed and the original poplar floor.

The most private lodging is in the Log Room with its own entrance at one side of the house, finished inside and out with logs. A colorful quilt brightens the blue iron bed, the TV is found in a dry sink, a harness holds the mirror and a pottery bowl serves as the washstand. Mints and vases of dried flowers are in each room.

Breakfast in the keeping room is continental-plus, involving juice, fresh fruit, cheese, cereal, granola, and homemade breads and muffins.
