An early American but comfortable feeling pervades this cream-colored brick Federal house at the main intersection in Shepherdstown, West Virginia’s oldest town. Jeanne Muir and Jim Ford, native Pennsylvanians but lately in Boston, bought the business in 2002 after “falling in love with Shepherdstown,” in Jim’s words.

The B&B, opened in 1985, has a rich, formal living room furnished with wing chairs, oriental scatter rugs and decanters of sherry at the ready. There are two dining rooms where a gourmet breakfast is served each morning. Another favorite gathering space is the library, with a TV/VCR, guest refrigerator, games and a stash of material on the area. Off this room is a tree-top balcony with rockers and lots of plants overlooking the rear garden.

Of the six guest rooms, we’re partial to Room 6 in back looking out over the garden. It comes with a canopied queen bed, a full bath and a large sitting area. Other rooms vary: one is rather small with a double bed and a large bath across the hall, another has a double and a twin, and still another a queen sleigh bed. A front corner room offers a red toile half-canopy queen bed, two upholstered chairs and a large full bath with big, thirsty towels.

Breakfasts here are special. A typical day begins with fresh fruit in lemon-mint syrup, followed by cranberry muffins. The main course could be blueberry-pecan french toast with local bacon. The next day might yield a hot cranberry-apple compote with a tomato-mushroom-cheese omelet and banana-chocolate chip muffins.
