Solomons Victorian Inn

125 Charles St., Box 759
Solomons, MD 20688

New owners have upgraded this turn-of-the-century Victorian house on a rise overlooking water on three sides. Helen and Richard Bauer, sailing enthusiasts from Frederick, poured considerable resources and energy into the old Davis House, whose owners retired.

Originally the family home of Clarence Davis, renowned builder of early 20th century sailboats, the main floor holds a cozy sitting room outfitted in wicker and a more formal front living room.

Five second-floor guest rooms are named for Davis yachts, each bearing the appropriate picture. Furnishings vary from Victorian to casual white wicker. The front Orithia Room has a kingsize mahogany four-poster bed and a bay window yielding harbor views. The other rooms have queensize beds and three have water views.

The ultimate for views, however, is the huge third-floor Solomons Sunset suite, segmented into separate areas by sloping ceilings with skylights. Big windows front and side frame water scenes, enjoyed from two sitting areas. A double jacuzzi lies beneath another sloping window. The iron and wicker bed is kingsize. The suite comes with a fireplace, TV, a kitchenette and a dining area.

There's no need to cook, however, for the Bauers offer a hearty breakfast on a breakfast porch they refinished after "stripping about 25 coats of paint." The fare the day of our visit featured summer melon raised by the Amish near Annapolis and a shrimp puff incorporating eggs, mushrooms, cheeses and shrimp, followed by sour cream coffee cake and blueberry muffins. Stuffed french toast with peach preserves, blueberry bread and currant muffins were on the next morning's docket.

In 1997, the Bauers added two more suites in a carriage house behind the main house. They installed double jacuzzi tubs and planned gas fireplaces for both. They decorated the upstairs kingsize suite in gold and white for romance. The downstairs suite with queen brass bed was appointed in florals in shades of mauve and green.

Five rooms and three suites with private baths. Doubles, $100 to $120. Suites, $160 to $225. Lower rates in winter. Two-night minimum stay weekends April to mid-November; three-night minimum on holiday and special weekends. Children over 13.
