St. Michaels/Oxford We found the ultimate waterside escape at this B&B, which has a 57-acre monopoly on paradise at the end of Tilghman Island. Water (the wide Choptank River on the east and south and the Chesapeake Bay on the west) surrounds the landscaped grounds and wildlife preserve on three sides. The point is so secluded it’s not surprising to learn that this once was the summer retreat for the Soviet embassy. The state acquired the property and ultimately leased it to Tom and Brenda Ward to run as a B&B. In the charming main house, part of which dates to before the Civil War, they offer four guest rooms. The Bay Room, with a queen bed and a twin, has a beamed ceiling and windows on three sides. Overlooking the pool is the refurbished Tilghman Room, with a king bed and a twin. We like to stay in any of the three cottages with fireplaces at water’s edge, rebuilt and updated after Hurricane Isabel hit the area in 2003. Each is a cocoon of knotty pine with a spacious bedroom, a comfortable living room with a futon and TV open to a well-equipped kitchen, an ample screened porch, and birds twittering and waves lapping at the rocky shore outside – just like the summer cottage of one’s dreams. The main house has a living room with TV/VCR, games and grand piano, a summery sun porch with rattan furniture, a chandeliered dining room, a back porch with rockers facing the bay and a room off the kitchen where guests help themselves to lemonade, iced tea, soft drinks or wine from the refrigerator. Morning brings a continental-plus breakfast with choice of juice, fresh fruit, cereal and homemade muffins. Outside are a jacuzzi beside a delightful freeform swimming pool, roses blooming around it, and a lighted tennis court, a swing and rope hammocks – once you stretch out in a hammock by the bay, you won’t want to get up. The place has a casual, laid-back feeling that’s perfect for a getaway beside the water. Four rooms and three cottage suites with private baths. Doubles, $120 to $175. Cottages, $225. Two-night minimum weekends, three nights on holiday weekends. Closed weekdays in winter. (410) 886-2452. Fax (410) 886-2053. E-mail: mward@intercom.net For more information:
