The Berkshires This sparkling white Georgian Colonial with a pillared porte cochere was built by a New York surgeon in the 1920s as a weekend retreat and now is one of the area's more inviting B&Bs. Applegate is set nicely back from the road on six tranquil acres bearing venerable apple trees, towering pines, flower gardens and a beckoning swimming pool. Inside are elegant common rooms, ten guest rooms with private baths and an effervescent welcome by Gloria and Len Friedman, she a retired educator and psychotherapist and he a retired computer executive. The Friedmans purchased Applegate in 1999, moving from their home in New York City. Off a lovely entry foyer are a fireplaced dining room, where three tables are each set for breakfast for four, and a large living room equipped with a grand piano. To the side of the living room is a sunporch, newly enclosed for use as a reading and TV room. Off the dining room is a screened back porch facing the pool and gardens. A carved staircase leads to the four main guest rooms, one the master suite with a kingsize poster bed, family photos on the mantel above the working fireplace, a sitting area with a sofabed and two chairs, and a great steam shower. The other rooms are slightly less grand in scale, holding queensize beds. One has Shaker-style pine furniture, another a walnut sleigh bed and a third an antique white iron bed and white and blue wicker furnishings. Two newer rooms are situated in a far wing of the house. One is a sunny corner space swathed in pale lavenders and greens with a tiger-maple four-poster, a sitting area and the best view of the grounds. The other is a smaller room done up in Victorian style with an antique bed and matching marble-topped dresser. The
premier accommodations are now four
luxury rooms, each with kingsize bed, fireplace, double whirlpool tub or
soaking tub, wet bar, sofa and TV/VCR. Two of these with private
balconies are on the third floor of the main building and two with
private patios are located on the ground floor of the former garage and
carriage house. The carriage house also had a second-floor
apartment for the chauffeur. It has been converted lately into a cottage
apartment with two queensize bedrooms, living room with TV/VCR, kitchen
facilities and bath with whirlpool tub. Chocolates and decanters of brandy are in each room. The Friedmans offer wine and cheese around 5 p.m. The continental-plus breakfast, including cereal and yogurt, is served amid stemware and Wedgwood china. Ten rooms and a two-bedroom cottage with private baths. June-October: doubles, $160 to $310 weekends, $125 to $260 midweek. Rest of year: $110 to $245 weekends, $95 to $220 midweek. Three-night minimum summer and holiday weekends, two-night weekend minimum in June, September and October. Children over 12. (413) 243-4451 or (800) 691-9012. Fax (413) 243-9832.
