Cape Cod One of the more gracious houses on the north shore
is a serene B&B hidden behind huge privet hedges. Notable breakfasts
are served by innkeepers Vince Toreno and Patricia Martin, who moved
here in 2004 from the In summer, the morning extravaganza is served on a delightful brick terrace in back of the house, with a fountain garden, a tennis court, gazebo and spacious lawns beyond. In other seasons, guests breakfast by the fire in the original keeping room that the couple redecorated in a warm Colonial style in a section of the house built in 1699. Birds flitted in and out of a remarkable birdhouse as we breakfasted on fresh orange juice, followed by goodies like cranberry pie, banana crumble and mini-croissants stuffed with cream cheese and raspberry preserve. Vince, who calls himself a frustrated chef, succeeds with such main courses as apricot and sausage quiche, crunchy applesauce pancakes, eggs southwest, and stuffed crępes with farmer's cheese, strawberry sauce and sour cream. In the evening, cordials are set out for guests by the fireplace in the library and in a well-furnished living room, where the massive open hearth has a beehive oven. The spacious Queen Charlotte’s Suite in which we stayed on the main floor has a lace queen canopy bed and a sitting area with matching wing chairs. Its floor is painted, stained and turpentined, giving it an elegant sheen. By the fireplace in the bedroom is a secret stairway to the second-floor suite and attic above – said to be where Tories were hidden during the Revolutionary War. The bathroom contains a large double whirlpool tub and a second bath area has a walk-in shower. Similar attributes are featured in the Ashley Suite, entered through french doors off the rear patio. Besides access to the patio, it has an entertainment center with TV and mini-refrigerator. Upstairs are two rooms and two suites, all but one
with working fireplaces. Each is welcoming, but we especially like the
end King George’s Suite with a kingsize canopy bed, a double jacuzzi
in an old closet, two velvet wing chairs facing the fireplace, and deep
blue wallpaper and bedspread. The Canterbury Suite has a queen poster
bed, fireplace, ivory wing chairs and armoire with TV/VCR and jacuzzi
tub, plus an adjacent sitting room with a twin poster bed and reclining
chair with ottoman. The Terrace Room with queensize antique iron bed and
Two rooms and four suites with private baths.
