Cape Cod
The Whalewalk Inn
220 Bridge Road
Eastham, MA 02642

Sophisticated country charm and a new spa and wellness center are offered in this delightful, six-building compound headquartered in an 1830s sea captain’s house on three-plus rural acres of lawns and gardens.

Twelve of the seventeen accommodations come with fireplaces and eight have private balconies or patios. They’re decorated with English country antiques in a light and airy style that’s more often associated with California than New England . Expect plump chairs and down comforters, interesting art, fresh flowers, dhurrie rugs and whimsical accents – a floral wallpaper border in place of a chair rail here, a lush potted geranium in a bathroom window there.

In particular demand are a deluxe room with kingsize four-poster bed off the patio, the studio suite in the secluded Salt Box cottage, and four ample suites with living/dining rooms and wet bars in the attached barn or the outlying Guest House.

A Carriage House addition off the Guest House offers four luxury queensize guest rooms on the first floor and two larger accommodations with sitting areas upstairs. Each has a gas fireplace and a private patio or balcony overlooking a wildflower meadow. Three have whirlpool tubs. The upstairs rooms add king beds, phones, TV/VCRs in cabinets, and extra-large bathrooms containing wet bars and small refrigerators.

The ultimate lodging is in the new penthouse suite above the spa – a 1,000-square-foot area with a living room, dining area, french doors onto a private deck, a cathedral-ceilinged bedroom with a remarkably high antique kingsize bed, fireplace and a luxurious bath with double whirlpool tub and glass block shower.

Accommodations vary in size, but guests have plenty of space in which to spread out. The main inn harbors a handsome living room, a cozy den with windows onto a large and colorful courtyard terrace (a festive setting for breakfast in summer), a sun porch where breakfast is served at a long antique table for ten in the off-season and a butler’s pantry with a guest bar. Breakfast is a series of culinary treats, as are the assorted hors d’oeuvres during BYOB cocktail hour with innkeepers Elaine and Kevin Conlin.

Elaine prepares breakfast dishes like the Whalewalk eggs benedict (with prosciutto rather than Canadian bacon), frittata primavera, Cape Cod pancakes topped with cranberries and blueberries, granola breakfast pizza topped with berries and sour cream, and croissant french toast drizzled with chocolate, mandarin oranges and raspberries.

Work off any calories in the inn’s spa and wellness center, opened in 2005 in a separate building toward the rear of the property. The main floor includes a fitness facility, an indoor resistance pool, Swedish sauna and a hot tub. Massage therapy treatments are available.

Eleven rooms and six suites with private baths. Memorial Day to Columbus Day: doubles: $205 to $340, suites $290 to $450. Rest of year: doubles $175 to $285, suites $215 to $395.
