Nantucket
Cobblestone Inn
5 Ash St.
Nantucket, MA 02554

A collection of wooden lighthouses lines the stairs, typical of the thoughtful touches offered at this B&B by Robin Hammer-Yankow, a past Chamber of Commerce president and civic booster, and her husband Keith, a local attorney. Their 1725 house beside a cobblestoned street is nicely furnished with period pieces.

All of their five guest rooms have private baths and queensize canopy beds, and some have fireplaces. Among the decorative touches are painted Colonial windows and beams, oriental rugs and swag curtains that match the canopies. A sense of history is imparted by tilted doorways, wide-plank floors and narrow closets. The third-floor bedroom, all white and pink with a fancy brass and iron headboard and teal spatter-painted floors, yields a harbor view.

Given its in-town location and the cobblestones on the street outside, we were surprised to find our second-floor room so utterly quiet – at least until the church bells tolled at 7 a.m., as they're prone to do in old New England seaside towns. We arose to prepare for Robin's continental breakfast, served family style at a long table in the dining area behind the living room. Fresh fruit, orange juice, homemade granola, cereals and melt-in-the-mouth pumpkin and zucchini breads provided plenty of sustenance for the day ahead.

Guests have room to spread out in the living room with fireplace and cable TV, a sun porch with wicker furniture, and a brick patio overlooking the garden. Cold beverages and treats like fresh brownies are put out in the afternoons. Robin's childhood Eloise keeps an eye on things from her perch on the ledge of a double dutch door.

Doubles, $125 to $160. No smoking.
