Williamstown
Arts Town of the East

Blessed with an uncommonly scenic setting and the riches that prestigious Williams College attracts and returns, this small college town in the northern Berkshires is an arts center of national significance.

Newsweek called the annual Williamstown Theatre Festival "the best of all American summer theaters." Connoisseur magazine said its three leading museums make it "an unlikely but powerful little art capital." U.S. News and World Report revealed that educators consider Williams College tops among academic institutions in the country.

Local promotion pieces note that Williamstown has been cited as "the most culture-saturated rural spot in the nation."

Williams, its associates and benefactors have inspired these superlatives. But they have geography and nature to thank for what some call "The Village Beautiful." Somewhat isolated in a verdant bowl, Williamstown dwells at the foot of Mount Greylock, the highest peak in Massachusetts, surrounded by Vermont's Green and New York's Taconic mountains. Not only do these provide great outdoor activities (in particular, golf, hiking and skiing). They also help Williamstown retain a charmed rural flavor that seems far more village-like than its population of 8,200 might suggest.

Williamstown is a sophisticated little town of great appeal, one that unfolds as you delve. The youthful dynamic of 2,000 college students is not readily apparent in the broader community. Besides natural and cultural attractions, there are good restaurants, selective shops and a handful of inns and B&Bs.

This is one place that has long been special. If you simply drive around town, you may not sense the subtle blend of sophistication and small town that is the real Williamstown. Here you must stop, stay awhile and explore.
