Lake Sunapee Region "Welcome to the Follansbee Inn – a great place to relax and enjoy a slower pace of living," according to the sign at the porch entry to this rambling old inn fronting on Kezar Lake. A big place with a hotel-style main floor and twenty guest accommodations, it seems smaller and is much more friendly than the country hotel that opened in 1840, thanks to innkeepers Cathy and Dave Beard of Colorado. And with a church beside, a cemetery behind and a lake in front, the setting is classic rural New England. Off a second-floor hall full of antiques are eleven guest rooms with private baths. Furnished in cozy country style, all have been spruced up with Eisenhart Vintage wallpapers, new mattresses, carpeting, large towels and bayberry soap made especially for the inn. Beds are king, queen, double or twins and topped with quilts. Our corner room overlooking the lake had good cross-ventilation, a plus on a sultry night. The Beards have made considerable improvements on the third floor, which formerly had twelve rooms with shared baths. A reconfiguration in 2001 resulted in five rooms with private baths and a couple of two-room suites with jacuzzi baths. The homey main floor has a cozy sitting room paneled in barnwood and furnished with patchwork cushions, baskets and all kinds of games, and a large front parlor, a bit more formal but most comfortable. It opens onto a dining room, where breakfast usually starts with fresh fruit and homemade granola and features an entrée such as crème brûlée french toast, puffed apple pancake or eggs benedict. Besides partaking of the innkeepers' hospitality, guests enjoy peaceful Kezar Lake, where swimming and boating beckon, and 500 wooded acres for hiking and cross-country skiing.
