Cape May Built in 1879 as Cape May’s first hotel, the Virginia has been grandly restored to what general manager Curtis Bashaw, co-owner with his father, calls a deluxe “boutique” hotel. Tiny white lights frame the exterior year-round, newspapers hang from a rack outside the dining room and appear at your door in the morning, and a pianist plays in the pleasant front library during the dinner hour in the acclaimed Ebbitt Room (see Dining Spots). On your way upstairs check the stained-glass window in the landing; a local craftsman spent a year looking for old glass with which to restore it. The second and third floors contain 24 modern, comfortable guest rooms that vary widely in size and shape. Like the public rooms, they are furnished in a simple yet sophisticated manner. Bedrooms are equipped with private baths with new fixtures, telephones and TVs and VCRs hidden in built-in cabinets. Room service is available, terrycloth robes are provided and the hotel’s guest services packet is one of the more informative we’ve seen. The decor is mostly soft peaches and grays, for a restful look. There are eleven standard-size rooms, eleven premium and two extra-premium at the front of the second floor with private balconies. Five have a sofa and two upholstered chairs each, though one premium room with a kingsize bed has room for only one chair. The wraparound balcony on the second floor gave our already expansive room extra space and was particularly pleasant the next morning for a continental breakfast, delivered to the room at the time specified, of fresh orange juice, fruit, danish pastries and croissants. Curt sees this as the prototype for other small
luxury hotels that he and his father want to develop along the East
Coast. A fine prototype it is. Twenty-four rooms with private baths.
