Westport/Essex Colorful in shades of pale yellow with light blue and brick red trim, this charmer dating to 1856 combines three architectural styles. The original 1856 home is Greek Revival, the front facade with mansard roof and three-story tower is Second Empire, and the full veranda added in the 1880s is of the Eastlake style. Wayne and Doris Deswert, who winter in Florida, took over the former Doll House B&B and spent a year refurbishing before reopening in 1994. The main floor contains a formal, high Victorian parlor furnished with antiques, plus an informal living room outfitted with TV and modern wicker. The parlor is notable for its English embossed wall coverings. Rich paneling and woodwork are evident throughout. Grammy’s Room in the back comes with twin poster beds, a few dolls and stuffed animals. It has an old dresser converted into a lavatory sink and a long closet for a bathroom. It may be rented with the adjacent Garden Room to form a two-bedroom family suite for four. The premier accommodation is a cathedral-ceilinged suite on the top floor of a recently constructed rear carriage house, designed and built to replicate the main house. It holds a kingsize bed and a sitting area with TV. Continental breakfast is offered upon request in an upstairs sitting room. Most guests wait for the three-course breakfast served by candlelight in the formal dining room, however. Fresh fruit, orange juice and homemade muffins precede the main event, perhaps quiche or blueberry waffles. Tea is served in the afternoon. It’s often taken on the 1,200-square-foot front veranda that catches a glimpse through the trees of Lake Champlain. The veranda contains a swing and a hammock, just like at Grandma’s house – to which many guests liken The Victorian Lady.
