Western From the front porch, guests enter directly into the living room of this neoclassic residence built in 1917 by a local builder who apparently did not want a foyer. Later a boarding house, it was opened in 1991 as a B&B by Fran and David Hand, York County residents who drove by, saw the house for sale and knew it was for them. After two years of work, they were ready with four guest rooms, all with private baths, TVs and VCRs. The largest is the Royal Room, which "we bill as fit for a king and his queen," says Fran, and is decorated with castles and such. The deep red wallpaper bears large blue flowers, and the twin beds can be joined as a king. The TV is hidden in an armoire, and a fireplace was added in 1999. The Garden Room also has a new fireplace. The Charleston Room, which Fran named for her favorite city, holds a queensize iron bed and is decorated in vivid florals with hats as accents. Its bathroom has a double shower with two seats. The Ivy Room comes with ivy and roses on the wallpaper and handpainted on the queen bed, the armoire and chest of drawers. On the main floor are two living rooms, one with a fireplace. Beyond is a dining room elegant in beige and teal. Fran serves guests a full breakfast of fresh fruit, juice, homemade muffins and breads, and a main dish like baked sausage casserole, pancakes and sausage, or a baked egg casserole. Out back is her pride and joy, the Enchanted Cottage, converted in 1997 from a brick carriage house. It’s a large space with a circular jacuzzi tub in one corner. A three-sided glass fireplace faces the jacuzzi as well as the queensize iron bed and a sitting area with a sofabed. All the lights operate on dimmer switches. A kitchenette comes with a microwave and refrigerator. Hand-painted vines, flowers and brickwork decorate the sponge-painted walls. Thick carpeting, a ceiling fan and built-in stereo system are other attributes. The three-section bathroom has a double vanity and a shower area big enough to accommodate a wheelchair. Outside is a brick patio up against the sidewalk. Outside also is a new eight-person hot tub for inn guests. Fluffy robes are provided for guests to wear on their way to the hot tub. Four rooms and one cottage with private baths. Doubles, $95 to $125 weekends, $90 to $115 midweek. Cottage, $199 weekends, $169 midweek. No smoking. (717) 653-4525 or (800) 742-3533.
