Newport The folks from the Cliffside Inn acquired the Admiral Benbow Inn, upscaled and refurbished it with the predictable amenities in 2001. They named it for the mother of artist Beatrice Turner, whose summer home eventually became the Cliffside. This 1855 structure, notable for 27 tall arched windows and listed on the National Register, is along a prime residential street descending to the waterfront. Gas fireplaces were installed in all of the three-story inn’s thirteen guest quarters. King and queensize beds, elegant quilts and window treatments, new rugs and carpeting, TV/VCRs and telephones are common to all. The kingsize Tycoon Suite on the third floor with a 43-foot-stretch along the front of the house offers a water view, one of three new double whirlpool tubs and a digital media center. It’s decorated with antique money, and stock and bond certificates from the Robber Baron Era. The rear Harbor View Spa Room with an ornate French queen bed and nautical decor has a rooftop deck with a private hot tub. The pampering service and luxuries for which Cliffside is known are duplicated here – in some cases, literally. Breakfast and full afternoon tea service are prepared by the chef from Cliffside, and homemade dessert treats accompany nightly turndown service. The building’s largest single space, previously devoted to an innkeeper’s apartment, was converted into a stunning Victorian parlor with not one but two fireplaces. It’s furnished with period antiques, rich fabrics and four large portraits of Adele Haas Turner, painted by her daughter. The new innkeeper from the Cliffside resides in a room on the third floor.
