Champlain
Islands Off by itself on Lake Champlain, this lodge with restaurant and motel is particularly good for those who want to be away from it all. The waterfront location is one of the most appealing around, and Adirondack chairs are scattered about the lawns down to the rocky shore. It’s a family operation, energetic innkeepers Mark and Kathy Infante having taken over from his parents who started the lodge in 1951. Some of the area's finest meals are served in summer in the original lodge, which has a cathedral ceiling opening to a second-floor loft. Six attractive units in the adjacent motel look out onto the lake. Three have kingsize beds and two have two double beds. The end Sunflower Suite with two bedrooms and one and a half baths is good for families. Each unit has a ceiling fan and a clock-radio. Kathy hand-stenciled the walls of each and added her sister’s wall quilts and memorabilia appropriate to the individual room’s theme in an effort to “make this more like a B&B.” A full breakfast of the guest’s choice, from eggs benedict to belgian waffles, is served in the dining room or on the waterside deck. The common front veranda of the motel building facing the lake is paved with Vermont marble. Canoes and sea kayaks await at water’s edge, and bicycles also are available for rent.
