Southern Vermont
Old Inns, New Style

By Nancy and Richard Woodworth

As verdant as the Green Mountains and as New England as they come. That's the area from Dover to Dorset, names that have an English ring to them, but that are the heart of old New England – or is it old New England, new style?

The fairly broad area embraces such storybook Vermont towns as Wilmington, Newfane, Weston and Manchester. It ranges from unspoiled Dorset, a hamlet almost too quaint for words, to changing West Dover, where condominiums and resorts thrive in the shadow of Mount Snow ski area.

This is a land of mountains and lakes, ski and summer resorts and, because of its fortuitous location for four-season enjoyment within weekend commuting distance of major metropolitan areas, a center for fine inns and restaurants.

Some of the East's leading inns were established here before people elsewhere even thought of the idea. In an era in which new inns and B&Bs seem to be popping up everywhere, most of those featured here have been around a while, the better to have established themselves in the vanguard of lodging and culinary success.

The food here is far more than Vermont cheddar cheese and maple syrup, as adventuresome diners have known for the last twenty years or so. Many of the area’s better dining rooms are found in its inns. Several country restaurants are dining destinations as well.
