Waitsfield and Warren
Westhill House
1496 West Hill Road
Warren, VT 05674

A wonderfully secluded setting on nine acres next to the Sugarbush Golf Course and Ski Touring Center, a quaint Vermont home dating to the 1850s and welcoming hosts commend this eight-room B&B. Not to be overlooked are luxury amenities, gourmet breakfasts, occasional dinners and charming common rooms.

Peter and Susan MacLaren bought West Hill House in April 2006.  They have lived in Scotland, Canada, France and this country, have traveled widely and welcomed people from around the world into their various homes over the years. Peter's recent retirement from 35 years in the telecommunications industry enabled them to follow their long-held dream of owning a B&B.

All eight guest quarters have queen or king/twin beds and gas fireplaces. Their spacious baths feature jacuzzi tubs or steam showers. Thick towels and robes are the norm. The TV sets offer access to the inn's 450-title movie collection. In addition to complimentary Wi-Fi Internet access, free phone calls to anywhere in the U.S. and Canada are offered on the room phones.

Guests gather in any of three large common rooms. There is a huge living room with a stone fireplace, comfortable chairs and a round table ideal for playing board games. At the side is a small wet bar, where guests help themselves to snacks, soft drinks, beer and wine using the honor system. From the living room you walk through to the bright, vaulted-ceiling sunroom with windows onto the gardens on three sides. It provides access to the large deck – covered with a high canopy in the summer months – and pathways to the gardens.  At the front of the house is a massive library with brick fireplace, where there’s a pool table for guest use.

Guests relax on the wicker-filled front porch or the large side deck facing bird feeders, tiny red squirrels, a gazebo built from birch logs, ornamental ponds and prolific gardens. Guests who stroll in the gardens find delightful places to sit and relax.

Breakfast on the deck or in the beamed English antique dining room begins with juice, homemade sweet breads or muffins and a special fruit dish. The menu of the day might include sweet pepper scrambled eggs, ginger pancakes with lemon sauce, pain perdu with Mad River Valley maple syrup, asparagus-filled crêpes and Granny's cheesey soufflé.

Susan, who loves to cook and entertain, prepares optional candlelight dinners with soup, salad, entrée and dessert on Saturday evenings by prior arrangement for six or more guests. Among guest favorites are roast chicken basted with maple syrup over roasted vegetables, braised pork chops with onions and apples, coq au vin and beef bourguignonne.

Five rooms and three suites, all with private en-suite baths. Doubles, $150 to $220 weekends, $140 to $200 midweek. Add $15 for foliage season and holidays. Two-night minimum weekends, three-night minimum preferred for  foliage and holiday weekends. Children over 12.
