Woodstock/Quechee This historic inn in the hamlet of South Woodstock, the heart of Vermont’s horse country, has long been a favorite of the equestrian set as well as others seeking a rural setting. Innkeepers Jack and Nicole Maiden, who took over in 2002, redecorated the public rooms, upgraded the restaurant, installed a long bar in the tavern to make it more of a pub and started updating the guest rooms. “Our signature is service and attention to detail,” said Jack, who picked up on the importance of such things while serving as chief operating officer for the Eileen Ford model agency in New York. Accommodations include twelve rooms in the three-story inn dating to the 1830s, seven in the old tavern building, and eight out back in the motel-style log lodge, including two suites with whirlpool tubs. Rooms vary in size and most have queen or king beds covered with down duvets. All have TV/VCRs and Bose radios. Twenty have fireplaces or wood stoves, and five have whirlpool tubs. A collection of old bottles is over the mantel in the much-photographed corner Room 2, with a kingsize four-poster bed and a flat-screen TV with VCR/DVD. We liked even better our tavern room, twice as big as the norm with three closets, beamed ceiling, bentwood rockers, a large bathroom, and a four-poster king bed. The log lodge and tavern building are set up with extra bedding to accommodate families. Above the inn is a spring-fed pond for swimming. Lawn chairs are scattered about to take in the view of cows grazing on the hillside. Equestrians can rent horses in nearby stables, and the inn can arrange horse and buggy rides or horse-drawn sleigh rides. Overnight guests get a full country breakfast, from
omelets to blueberry pancakes. It’s served in the sunny terrace room. (802) 457-1473 or (800) 836-1193. Fax (802) 457-4469. E-mail: kedroninn@aol.com. For more information: www.kedronvalleyinn.com.
