The Inn at Monticello

Nestled at the foot of Monticello Mountain on spacious dogwood-dotted lawns set back from quiet Route 20 is this small country manor house, ideally located near Charlottesville ’s main attractions. The house dates to 1850 but does not seem that old in its new incarnation. It was converted in 1989 into a comfortable, welcoming B&B and expanded in 1997 by new owners Norm and Becky Lindway, retired educators from Cleveland who were “not ready to retire.”

The Lindways offer five air-conditioned guest rooms with private baths, each decorated in a different period with antiques and reproductions. Cotton sheets and down comforters are on every bed, now all king or queensize. Our quarters in the first-floor Lilac Room, fashioned from the former dining room and distinctive in periwinkle blue, had a high, step-up queensize bed and a private screened porch. Another favorite is the second-floor Victorian Green Room with a carved walnut Eastlake bedstead and an antique mantel over the working fireplace. A loveseat slants across a corner. Guests in the other upstairs front bedroom can look out to adjacent Willow Lake , a pond with catfish and snapping turtles, at the edge of the property. Another main-floor bedroom has an arched canopy queen bed.

Homemade chocolate-chip and oatmeal cookies, tea and other beverages are offered in the long, comfortable common room outfitted with Virginiana. Breakfast is served at a dining table beside the fireplace in the common room. The fare the day of our visit included orange juice, melon and strawberries, a frittata with peppers and mushrooms, and diced potatoes flavored with rosemary. Praline french toast, Southwest chile cheese puff and a spinach and egg casserole are other offerings.

Unlike their predecessors, the Lindways live on the property in an addition they built.
